The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, targets the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
