In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Discussions Taking Place
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
